Stepping into Heathers the Musical at the Stockton Globe Theatre felt like being invited into Westerburg High’s exclusive clique – but instead of cafeteria trays, we were greeted with a cocktail of nostalgia and 80s fabulousness. Before the show even started, we were whisked away to the 1983 Bar where we indulged in slush puppies (because what’s a better way to Freeze Your Brain right?) and filled up on classic pick 'n' mix. It was the perfect prelude to an unforgettable night of high school drama, dark comedy, and killer tunes.
Now, let’s talk about the girl power. In a world where ‘being popular’ seems like everything, Heathers the Musical delivers a hard-hitting, hilarious punch to the gut. At the forefront, Jenna Innes as Veronica Sawyer was pure magic. She took us from geeky misfit to badass rebel, delivering each line with enough sass to silence even the infamous Heather Chandler. Speaking of which – Eliza Bowman as Heather C. didn’t just dominate the stage, she owned it. From her icy glares to her chilling rendition of "Candy Store," she had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand. She was the very definition of "mythic bitch," and we LOVED every second of it.
The musical didn’t shy away from the heavy stuff either. There were no glossed-over, glittery endings here. Suicide, sexual assault, toxic relationships, and the pressures of teen life were all addressed with a blend of dark humour and stark reality. The musical masterfully walked the line between comedy and commentary. Scenes like Veronica’s internal battle with her feelings for J.D., or Heather McNamara’s heartbreaking spiral into depression with "Lifeboat," were hauntingly raw. But somehow, amidst the seriousness, we still found ourselves tapping our feet and laughing through the pain; a perfect example of why Heathers is so special.
In a world where high school is still a battlefield, Heathers the Musical is the perfect reminder that sometimes you’ve got to stand up to the Heathers of the world, even when they come in KILLER shoulder pads and plaid skirts.A huge thank you to The Stockton Globe Theatre for inviting us to such an unforgettable experience.
